Klonopin Detox Program

Klonopin Detox

What is Klonopin?

Klonopin is the brand name for a type of benzodiazepine prescription drug. The pharmaceutical name is Clonazepam and this is a commonly prescribed benzodiazepine. Klonopin/Clonazepam is prescribed to prevent seizures and to treat anxiety and panic attacks. Klonopin acts on specific brain neurotransmitters called GABA receptors that are responsible for initiating chemicals that cause a person to feel relaxed and at ease. The effectiveness of Klonopin for helping a person who is diagnosed with anxiety or panic disorders is significant. Although Klonopin is also prescribed to help prevent grand mal seizures, it is more widely prescribed for managing anxiety.

Benzodiazepines such as Klonopin are the second most abused types of prescription drugs in the United States with opiate pain killers like Vicodin or Oxycontin, being the first. According to the Journal of American Family Physicians, there are over 50 million prescriptions written for benzodiazepines every year. JAFP emphasizes how the effectiveness of benzodiazepines cannot be argued and notes that Klonopin is one of the four most preferred benzodiazepine drugs.

There is little doubt of the therapeutic efficacy of benzodiazepines in reducing anxiety, inducing sleep, and quelling panic symptoms…the anxiolytic and hypnotic efficacy of benzodiazepines has been well established by numerous placebo-controlled studies. Benzodiazepines are widely prescribed, with four of them—alprazolam (Xanax), clonazepam (Klonopin), diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan)—listed among the top 100 most commonly prescribed medications. Why is Klonopin So Addictive?

Klonopin can become addicting when a person either develops a tolerance for it or when they misuse the drug. Most addicts who become addicted to Klonopin began taking it for medical diagnosis and in a short time (2-6 months), required more of the drug to get the same relief. The concern with benzodiazepines like Klonopin is how quickly a person can develop a tolerance to them. Most doctors are cautious when they prescribe Klonopin or other benzodiazepines, understanding that long term use of a benzodiazepine is not only a precursor for addiction but in time becomes ineffective.

The people who struggle with an addiction to Klonopin most commonly use the drug to ward off uncomfortable feelings of nervousness, anxiety, and or depression. The effects of Klonopin reverse and calm anxiety and cause the person to feel relaxed and at ease. Additionally, Klonopin is also combined with other substances like alcohol, opiates, and methamphetamine to enhance the effects of each drug.

How to tell if you are addicted to Klonopin

When a person has become addicted to Klonopin, they will experience Klonopin withdrawal symptoms.  These symptoms that are caused by an addiction to Klonopin can be extremely dangerous and cause a life-threatening seizure or another medical emergency to occur. The Klonopin detox symptoms that a person experiences are physical emotional and mental. If a person experiences the following symptoms as a result of not taking Klonopin, they are likely addicted to Klonopin:
