Joseph Hawkins

Joseph Hawkins

Primary Therapist

I graduated from South Dade Senior High in 1976. After completing high school I attend Texas Southern University (TSU). While attending TSU I completed two years of study, I was not focused and discontinued my education. I then enlisted in the United States Army in the 2d Airborne Division as a paratrooper, from which  I served four years and received an Honorable Discharge.

The next few years happen to many young America, poor decisions caused a downward spiral in my persona affairs. This led to incarceration, substance abuse, a failed marriage, and many other dire circumstances.

A year later I bean go redirect my life into a positive image and found the courage to fight my way out of despair.  After three years (2008-2010) of residing at the Miami Rescues Mission (homeless shelter and drug treatment center) and volunteering, I received counseling and be began my journey to regain my worth and dignity. While residing at the Miami Rescues Mission, I enrolled at Broward Community College in 2009. With the few credits I earn at TSU I received an Associate of Arts Degree in 2010.

After completing my studies at Broward Community College I knew I wanted to continue m education. I enrolled at Florida Memorial University (FMU) in the fall of 2010 with the intention of becoming a vital member of society as a Social Worker. Many of the classes taken at FMU significantly broaden my understanding of the social ills that plague our society, many of which had me enslaved. Two years later, I graduated from FMU.

After completing my studies at Florida Memorial University I enrolled at Barry University in the summer of 2013 (accelerate program) earning my Master’s degree within one year. I chose Social Work as my field of study to fulfill a desire to promote a positive change to the economically and/or socially disadvantage. I do believe that we are our brother’s keeper. We have a responsibility to prepare ourselves with every method available to make a difference in the life of o those we encounter daily. It is so easy to criticize, demand, or simply ignore the disintegration of our society. If each one reaches one, we can begin to impact our world. The Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr states that “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and  the wisdom to know the difference.”  I have come to understand that knowledge is power and my goal now is to help others discover this power and avoid the perils and pitfalls that my journey led me through.
