Dangers of Addiction to Robitussin

Regular abuse of Robitussin can lead to the development of addiction. This drug has been popularized by many hip-hop stars and rappers calling it “purple drank” or “sizzurp”. This is a cocktail containing the Robitussin medication as well as soda and candies and is taken solely to get high. The recommended safe dosage for DXM is between 15 MG and 30 MG within four hours. There are 4 levels, or plateaus, associated with DXM/Robitussin abuse. The first plateau occurs when a dosage between 100-200 mg is taken. It is shown to result in feelings of stimulation. The second plateau happens with doses of 200 mg to 400 mg. The most common effects at this level are visual hallucinations and euphoria. The third level occurs between doses of 300 mg to 600 mg. Symptoms become more serious including hallucinations, euphoria, visual distortions, impaired motor function, and coordination. The fourth plateau occurs from doses at 60 mg or more and the symptoms are the most extreme. When this drug is taken in excessive doses, 600 mg or more, it can act as a dissociative anesthetic and mimics the effects of other drugs such as PCP or Ketamine. Side effects can last for up to 6 hours. Abuse of this drug comes with a lot of signs and symptoms such as:

  • Euphoria
  • Feelings of detachment from the body
  • Extreme sedation
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Dizziness
  • Hallucinations
  • Double vision
  • Impaired motor skills
  • Itching
  • Numbness
  • Symptoms of psychosis
  • Racing heart
  • Vomiting

Addiction to this drug can often happen without much warning. You start out taking it for fun, and before you know it, you find doing anything sober extremely difficult. DXM abuse can also have a big impact on a person’s life. When a person becomes increasingly preoccupied with taking the drug, their relationships and responsibilities can be damaged in the process. They will start seeing difficulty with family members, close friends, and find it difficult to maintain school or work obligations
