Tramadol Detox
What is Tramadol?
Tramadol is a prescription pain killer that is an opioid. For many years Tramadol had the reputation as being a less risky opioid pain reliever to prescribe to chronic pain sufferers. It was considered safer to prescribe to patients with a low tolerance to pain medications such as children or for those patients who were at risk for developing an addiction. Tramadol was not scheduled as a narcotic by the DEA until 2014. Since then, it is now a schedule IV narcotic in the same class as benzodiazepines such as Xanax. Still, Tramadol cannot be compared outright to other prescription pain killers such as oxycontin or Vicodin because it does not bind as tightly to the opioid receptors as would morphine.
Tramadol doses range from 50mg, 100mg, 150mg, 200mg, and 300mg tablets. Tramadol goes by these brands: Ultram, Ultram ER, and Conzip. The maximum dose allowed for Tramadol prescriptions is 300 mg/day. Tramadol is prescribed for moderate to severe pain following surgeries, invasive dental work, and in cases when there is a documented risk for addiction, such as someone who is in recovery from substance abuse. The street manes for Tramadol include Grammys, Ultras, and Dolls.

Signs of Tramadol Addiction
Since Tramadol is an opioid drug, there will be similarities in how one behaves when they are addicted to Tramadol that can be compared to the behaviors that other opioid addictions cause. Persons who are addicted to Tramadol are identified as having Opioid Use Disorder, also known as addiction, to opiates like heroin, fentanyl, oxycontin, Vicodin, etc. For people with opioid use disorder, the most prominent sign of addiction is a noticeable change in behavior. Many opiate addicted people lose their jobs, begin shoplifting, lying to friends and family to get money or make excuses for why they have no money. They will isolate themselves from others and be resistant to doing the activities they once enjoyed.
Another change in behavior is a difference in their appearance and daily routines. Sleeping during the day or appearing sleepy, not showering, or cleaning the home, forgetting urgent appointments, or misplacing house keys or cellphones. Emotionally a person who is addicted to Tramadol or other opiates will also be agitated easily, overly dramatic, and may seem like they are depressed. Other signs of addiction to Tramadol include the following:
- Obsession on having or getting Tramadol
- Lying to Doctors about their pain level to get Tramadol
- Borrowing or stealing money to buy Tramadol
- Buying Tramadol illegally from dealers or online
- Drinking alcohol or using other drugs while taking Tramadol
- The onset of withdrawal symptoms when they do not take Tramadol daily
Tramadol Withdrawal Symptoms
The withdrawal symptoms that Tramadol cause differ slightly form other opioid withdrawal symptoms. Tramadol does not bind to the opioid receptors in the brain as strongly as morphine or other potent opiates. It also shares similarities with the antidepressant medication Effexor as a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. Therefore, Tramadol detox symptoms will include other symptoms, not typical of opioid withdrawal. The National Institutes of Health explain how the occurrence of other withdrawal symptoms occurs when someone is addicted to Tramadol.
According to the National Institutes of Health:
In most cases, the Tramadol withdrawal symptoms consisted of classical opioid withdrawal, but in some cases were accompanied by withdrawal symptoms not normally observed in opiate withdrawal… physicians and other healthcare professionals need to be aware of the potential of Tramadol or Ultram to induce withdrawal of the classical opioid type, and that atypical withdrawal may also occur. (NIH)
The atypical Tramadol withdrawal symptoms that can occur:
- Hallucinations
- Paranoia
- Extreme anxiety
- Panic attacks
- Confusion
- Sensory experiences such as numbness and tingling in one or more extremities
The typical Tramadol withdrawal symptoms will include flu-like symptoms, nausea and vomiting, rapid pulse, and increased blood pressure, sweating and cold chills, muscle aches and body pains, intense cravings for Tramadol. Once a person does experience Tramadol detox symptoms, they will need medical care. Attempting to quit Tramadol cold turkey without medications and medical supervision is simply to difficult. Detoxification from opioids is incredibly challenging, and most people cannot endure the detox symptoms and will go back to using it.
